2024 is going to be an exciting year for circadian lighting
Revolutionary new products addressing the challenges of circadian lightning are about to be released. and a print version of THE LIGHT DOCTOR will become available.
In 2023 I released the chapters of my book, THE LIGHT DOCTOR on Substack, which explains the health risks of blue-chip LED and blue rich fluorescent lights, and the circadian lighting solutions that scientific research has made possible.
In 2024 I plan a print version of my book as requested by my readers. And I will use this newsletter to announce new circadian lighting products as they become available, and new scientific findings as they are published. It promises to be a very exciting year for effective circadian lighting solutions that everyone can use to protect their health.
To summarize what you learned from THE LIGHT DOCTOR in 2023:
More than 99% of the LED lights on the market have a huge health downside. They are heavily promoted (and incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lights banned) to meet climate/energy goals - but their spectrum emits a spike of blue light. This is because their lumens per watt efficiency is based on the use of a blue LED chip.
Blue-rich light in the evenings (and too little daylight exposure) disrupts our circadian clocks and substantially increases the rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer (plus anxiety, depression and other mental disorders)–and shortens lifespan by multiple years.
Evidence for the harmful nocturnal effects of blue-rich lights is now well established, with over 10,000 peer-reviewed scientific research papers published, plus reports by the NIH and WHO.
Health disorders occur because the sky-blue wavelengths (440-495 nm) in the light spectrum are detected by blue light melanopic receptors in our eyes. This is the signal that the circadian clocks in our brain and body organs use to determine if it is day or night.
248 leading scientists recently issued a warning of the Harmful Health Effects of Blue-Rich LED Light at Night, including the recommendation that blue-chip LEDs should carry a warning label “May be hazardous if used at night.”
Light fixtures and bulbs are now becoming available which provide healthy circadian lighting. They automatically switch between a MaxBlue Day mode with >20% blue content and ZeroBlue Evening mode with <2% blue, with a 30-minute gradual transition at dawn and dusk. This natural pattern of circadian blue keeps our body in sync and prevents circadian disruption.
Circadian lighting has been shown to
Improve sleep duration and quality, and restore normal melatonin levels,
Increase alertness & reduce fatigue-related errors.
Shorten hospital stays and reduce falls.
Prevent pre-diabetic symptoms and excessive appetite caused by light at night.
Reduce gastrointestinal disorders and the use of over-the-counter pain medications.
In 2024 THE LIGHT DOCTOR will announce and review the new circadian lighting products that will shortly be entering the market.
So stay tuned to this healthy lighting channel!
